Model Searches and/or Conventions

OK so ads are on the radio and in the paper, they say a Model Search is coming to town ... yay! Now's your big chance to be discovered by a "real" model company from some far away place where things really happen not like your home town... right?

I have to preface this with the fact that I especially love the ads for these events that include a dozen or so brand names of big agencies and clients and then somewhere in the mundane text of some obscure form there is text that will completely negates this. Hey, that's the business! Buyer beware.

Almost always and with very few exceptions (none that I have ever seen but maybe there is an exception somewhere so I'll be generous) these are scams. They take nearly everyone and sometimes redirect those they don't take to a sister company so they don't lose any "suckers"... I mean "models". If they do turn down a few people they will often do it by making them approach a table or some obvious location in full view of the other aspiring people and make a spectacle of it so as to make it appear to everyone that they do not accept everyone. Sometimes they turn down the same group of people everywhere they go because those folks are actually working with them.

Some good conventions actually do assemble a panel of legitimate scouts from other agencies for you to meet. The promoters are paid a fee for every model hired. This is OK but these legitimate opportunities are rare.

Face it, the goal of these "events" is to swoop into a town and swoop out with a bunch of money. They are generally just people looking to charge outrageous prices to produce portfolios and charge highly inflated prices for listing you online. Sometimes people pay big bucks and then never actually even get to see the pictures.

Of these events let me say this... you are a hundred times more likely to be discovered by choosing an entry level service and working your way up. Use some common sense... you want an agent that will be in your town next week. heh... It's nice to have someone you can go see and look in the eye to discuss your needs.
